Mafer Gisbert

This week’s hero in Acton was an ophthalmologist called Mafer Gisbert. I really liked her talk a lot because she said that there are some times that you are just not going to want to keep going but that is your choice. That is the most important thing that I learned from her. I liked that she also showed us also some medical things that she uses. Something that was also really interesting for me was that she didn’t know what she wanted to do and work until the last year of school. She has also helped a lot poor families and that is another thing that I admire from her.

What do you need to play soccer?

To play soccer you need some things. It is not a lot of things but they are really important. If you don’t have one of them in a soccer match you will not be able to play. Here they are:

1. The first thing that you need is soccer shoes with cleats, this are the most important things to play soccer.

2. The second things you need is shin guards. They protect your leg if you get kicked or someone commits a foul on you. There are two types of shin guards, the ones that have a sleeve so the shin guard doesn’t move:

And the ones that have straps and and an ankle strap:

3. And the third and last thing you need is your uniform. The uniform needs to have a jersey, a short and socks:

If you have all of this, you are ready to have some fun and play soccer!

Depauw University Soccer Camp

In my last post I told you about Depauw University Soccer Camp. I really want to go there this year again because as I told you I got a really big opportunity there and I don’t want to loose it. What I am going to do to go there again is that I will do a crowd funding to collect money to go to the camp again. I will keep you posted on that and I also will tell you where you can collaborate.

Stephanie Zelaya

On Tuesday Stephanie Zelaya came to Acton and talked to us about her journey. It was really cool because it was like and example of the book that we are reading in Acton that is “the start-up of you“. What she said was literally what we are reading in Acton and there I could see that it is very useful. She is a singer and she will release her first album in February 2015. My greatest learning was that your family is something that can always help you in what you are doing.

Sugata Mitra

On Monday we went to UFM to listen to a talk that Sugata Mitra gave. It was a really cool talk, he talked about the hole in the wall project that you can see right here. Some of my takeaways were that there is no limit for creativity and that if you work hard you can always get to where you want to be. He also came to visit Acton and he just answered a lot of question that the Acton community asked him. I will leave you with one question, why do you think that the traditional school is still obsolete?

Bio

Alvaro Monzon is a still growing soccer player in Futeca Cayala, Guatemala. He has always played soccer since he was very little. His love for soccer was really big (and is still really big) but he was never in a soccer team until 2012 because of school. Then he joined Acton Academy Guatemala and had more time to play for a soccer team, so he joined Futeca. In Acton Academy Guatemala he has advanced more in his passion (soccer) and more in what he needs to do in order to get to where he wants to be when he grows up.

Now it’s time for you to know a bit more about Alvaro. As you already know, he really likes to play soccer. He goes to soccer training four days a week, an hour and a half each day. At Acton Academy Guatemala he also plays soccer in breaks and lunches. Something that you really don’t know about him and it’s weird for a soccer player to do it is to ride a dirt bike and practice motocross and enduro. He started liking motocross and enduro when he was about 11 years old. His dad was always telling him that it was really dangerous and since he plays soccer he could break some bone and maybe stop playing soccer. Finally when he was 14 his dad saw that enduro racing was not too dangerous, so he gave Alvaro a dirt bike. He is actually practicing in a motocross track because that helps him also to get better. He started practicing more and more every month and now he is also a still growing dirt bike rider. But he takes dirt bike racing more like a big hobby, not like soccer that is his true passion.

Alvaro as you already know loves playing soccer and dirt bike racing. But his whole life isn’t just about those two things. He also enjoys a lot to create things or just do and build things. Alvaro likes to build things and Acton does a business fair every year. In the business fair every student creates their own product and then they have to sell it. For the business fair Alvaro built a mini PVC soccer goal. That was his first business fair and it went really well for him because he managed to sell all of his product. He was always thinking that he was never going to be good to sell things or to build things but that day he realized that he could, and that he was not bad at doing it. He is into a project right now with his brother. His brother likes mountain biking a lot, Alvaro also likes mountain biking. They are building a ramp in their neighborhood’s forest. Since there are a lot of jumps there they also have a kind of trail there where they race. Dirt bike racing can also relate to mountain biking so that is why he also likes it. Sometimes when Alvaro is unable to go to the motocross track for his training he practices in his neighborhood’s forest. Something interesting in Alvaro’s life is that he has changed school two times, and that is something that kind of changed his life also. When he changed for the first time he got the opportunity to go in a exchange to Indiana. There he went to two soccer camps in two universities. One in Depauw University and one in Akron University. In Depauw University he got a mentor and the soccer coach from there told him that it would be a really good idea for him to play soccer there and that from there he could start getting better and start playing professional soccer. When he changed schools for the second and last time, he got to Acton. There he had more time to work more on soccer and everything else that he also likes. There were also some opportunities for him in enduro racing to compete but he didn’t got into the racing because he thought that he was not ready. He kept practicing so in 2015 he is thinking about getting into the national enduro competence because he thinks that he is going to be able to compete now. It has been 2 years since he got a dirt bike and until now he is going to compete. He waited until he was more than ready.

Where I want to be when I grow up and where I am to get there

As you know what I really like to do is to play soccer. Where I want to be when I grow up is playing professional soccer. When I was very little I started saying that I wanted to be an astronaut, or an engineer, etc. But now I know that what I really want in my life is to play soccer. But I also have to study something in the university because what happens after stop playing soccer. I need to continue to work and do something else instead of soccer. I still don’t know what I want to study but I think that I will soon know.

But, where I am to get there? I went to two soccer camps in last year’s summer, one in Depauw University and one in Akron University. They were both really cool because I learned a lot from both of them. In Depauw the soccer team coach told me that it would be a really good idea for me to go play soccer there for Depauw. I asked him to be my mentor and we have been exchanging emails about what I need to play in Depauw and to get a scholarship. I think that that is a really big step to get where I want to and there is actually where I am.
